Even while celebrating a holiday and indulging in sweets, you can choose healthier options. This reduced-sugar, whole wheat hamentashen is a healthier choice than the traditional recipe. Consider filling them with fresh fruit instead of sweetened jams.
Whole Wheat Hamentashen
Ingredients:
- 2 eggs
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 1 tsp orange zest (optional)
- 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- Water (if needed)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Beat eggs, oil, vanilla, and sugar together in a medium bowl. Sift in flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix until well combined.
- Add water if necessary to hold dough together.
- Place dough on a floured surface and roll out to 1/8 inch thick.
- Place 1 tsp of your favorite filling in the center, and fold corners over into triangles.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the corners are golden brown.
