JFCS is Steadfast in Our Commitment to Refugee Resettlement: We Couldn’t Do It Without You
Since federal funding that supports refugee resettlement came to a stop, resettlement agencies have been looking to private funding sources instead. Now more than ever, JFCS and other community agencies need the help of our supporters. Ivonne Smith-Tapia, Director of Refugee and Immigrant Services at JFCS, breaks down our essential work of helping newly settled families get acclimated into the community in this Religion News article.
JFCS serves 300 new refugee arrivals and over 8,000 individuals each year, providing essential services that ensure their wellbeing and livelihood. But without the support of community members, like you, the work of JFCS would not be possible.
The students of Community Day School not only enjoyed creating bags for the individuals we serve at the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, but they had a chance to learn about the difference they can make in our community.
The Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh jumped into actions last month to hand knit and crochet bags full of hats, scarves, baby blankets and more, for refugee and immigrant families.
The congregation at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer stood up for their community and donated winter clothing that will help many refugee and immigrant families keep warm.
UpStreet’s Youth Advisory Board Is Working to Make a Difference
UpStreet’s Youth Advisory Board is on a mission to fight the stigma of teen mental health, create welcoming and supportive events for other teens, and build awareness for youth mental health in the Pittsburgh region.
Their passion and drive is inspiring! Not only have they overcome their own mental health struggles, they are working to uplift their friends and peers. We reached out to our board members, asking them to share their motivations for joining. Their responses are nothing short of fierce.
“I care about mental health due to it hitting close to home. I joined the advisory board so that I could have more of an official role in helping combat the stigma associated with mental health.”
Lexie T. (she/her)
“What I want is to celebrate individuality, praise expression, and embrace everyone. The most important reason I came to YAB is because I’ve been in the rain myself, so I wanted to hold an umbrella for someone else.”
Hongyu D. (he/him)
“I joined the Youth Advisory Board because mental health has impacted my life in a variety of ways. Now that I have the strength to help others I want to offer my assistance to those who may need it.”
Mason P. (he/him)
