As we turn the page into 2019, Squirrel Hill streets look very much the same as they always have, bustling with people shopping and eating.
But many people are still thinking about October 27, and feel that the tragic shooting at the Tree of Life has changed this community forever. Some have a direct connection to the event itself: know the survivors, live on that street, could have been there, etc. But anyone could be feeling the fallout from a life-changing trauma like this one. Even the fearful thought that these horrible acts can and do take place in “our neighborhood” can stay with some people longer than others.
All of us remember the lost, but some people struggle harder to cope with grief and fear. We have sadly learned from other similar tragedies that healing can take months, even years. If you need help, know that this is normal. But what’s important is taking some action.
JFCS continues to offer counseling and has formed community support groups for anyone who may still feel incapacitated in any way by that terrible event. Here is the current schedule of ongoing community support.
Additional support groups, get-togethers and healing events will take place in the coming weeks and months. If you need help call JFCS Counseling Services at 412-521-3800.
